Water When It Matters Most

Family-run well pump specialists serving Northern NJ since 1952, available every hour of every day.

About Us

Ackerman Pump Co has been pulling water from the ground since 1952. That's not a marketing line. That's seven decades of knowing exactly what happens when a pump fails at 2 a.m. on a Sunday.

Don Slater Jr. has operated the company since 1991, carrying forward the work Harry Ackerman started in the highlands of Passaic County. The license number is NJ #2198. The rating across 132 reviews is a perfect 5.0. Neither of those numbers happened by accident.

This is a single-trade shop. They do well pumps. They do them right. Customers across Bergen, Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties call when other contractors have already quoted them too high or walked away from the problem.

What We Offer

Every service here begins underground. Well pump installation and repair form the core of the work, paired with tank installation and full 24/7 emergency response for the moments when waiting is not an option.

Beyond the pump itself: water yield testing to understand what your well can actually deliver, well video inspections to see what no one else can, well cleaning and chlorination, geothermal services, and well abandonment handled to code. Treatment services address what comes up with the water, not just the mechanism that moves it.

One call reaches a technician who knows the aquifer beneath Northern New Jersey the way a surgeon knows anatomy.

"We didn't have water and we knew it was a pump issue as other companies had come to look at it and quoted us very high rates. Ackerman Pump came on time and then promptly got to work. We had water after about two hours!! When they extracted the pump, we thought they would have to go to their office or Home Depot/Lowes to get a replacement. Except they didn't, they had a replacement ready to go in their trunk. They didn't try to sell us on other "upgrades", just did what was necessary to fix our issue. We are incredibly thankful for their prompt service and would recommend them without hesitation."

"I have no complaints about the work done and how professional this was. We had an emergency and they came within 24 hours. They assessed what needed to be done and did the work that day. However, something else went on our house and they even came back the day after and installed a new tank. Amazing work done within the 48 hours by them especially with such short notice on our end. Great company !!"

"I Just called ackerman pump and spoke to Don. I had a issue where I was not getting water and unfortunately, my location was a bit out of his area but he stayed on the phone with me and took the time to talk me through several trouble shooting options. We eventually found the problem and my water is back up a running. It's so nice to see that service is still of importance to individuals like Don. Please do not hesitate to contact Ackerman Pump for all of your well and water needs. He is a true professional."

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 24/7 emergency service actually mean here?

It means a real technician responds, not a voicemail. Ackerman Pump offers round-the-clock availability every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. If your well pump fails at midnight, that's when service begins.

Which counties does Ackerman Pump serve?

The primary service area covers Northern New Jersey including Bergen County, Morris County, Essex County, and Passaic County, with the home base in Hewitt, NJ.

What is a water yield test and when do I need one?

A water yield test measures how much water your well can reliably produce. It's typically required during real estate transactions, after drought conditions, or when water pressure has noticeably declined. Ackerman Pump performs this service as part of their standard offering.

Can Ackerman Pump handle geothermal well systems?

Yes. Geothermal services are part of their scope. If your heating or cooling system draws from a ground-source well loop, they have the technical background to service that infrastructure.

What is well abandonment and is it required?

When a well goes permanently out of service, New Jersey regulations require it to be properly sealed and abandoned to protect groundwater. Ackerman Pump handles this process in compliance with state code.

How long has Don Slater Jr. been running the company?

Don has operated Ackerman Pump Co since 1991, continuing the work started by the Harry Ackerman family in 1952. That's over 30 years of personal ownership by the current operator.

What if another company already told me the repair would be expensive?

It's worth a second opinion. Multiple customer reviews note that Ackerman Pump's assessment and pricing came in significantly lower than prior quotes from other contractors, and the work was completed the same day.
